In which I realize just how old I am

Last night, at the grocery store:

Me [looking at shopping list]: OK, now we need some frozen corn. [opens glass freezer door] Hmmm, they're out of the store brand. I guess we'll buy the Green Giant corn. [singing] Ho, ho, ho, Green Giant.

Leah: Why did you say "Green Giant" at the end there?

Me [puzzled]: Because that's how the commercial goes: "Ho, ho, ho, Green Giant ."

Leah: Oh, a commercial. I thought you were singing the 'ho, ho, ho' part of "All the Single Ladies".

Me: .... [then kills herself laughing]

And that right there is the generation gap: the Jolly Green Giant and Beyoncé.

Damn.

  1. Generation gap indeed

  2. I would have understood the Green Giant reference immediately. And definitely would not have gotten the song reference. I didn't even know who the woman in the photos was.

  3. Capitol Mom - It made me laugh too!

Jazz - Yep. But at least I knew what she was talking about. That oughta count for something. I'm old, but with it. Or does saying 'with it' mean I'm hopelessly uncool?

Jen - My nephew played that video non-stop over Christmas. Plus the youtube bit from the show Glee, where the football team does a dance routine to the show. It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1nixzYHDus and the 'ho, ho, ho' part starts about 41 seconds in.

  4. Hi Natalie, thanks for stopping by!

Oh, and Jen, that should have said "Plus the youtube bit from the show Glee, where the football team does a dance routine to the SONG." Not "show".

  5. Just catching up on my blog reading... love the "dominatrix in training" post. Priceless!

  6. Eve loves that Glee clip. And my five-year-old nephew sings "all the symbol ladies", or possible 'all the cymbal ladies'. I wouldn't have known the song except for Glee.

  7. I'm impressed like the others that you recognised the Beyonce bit.

  10. WackyMummy - Welcome back! I loved that conversation too. I swear, if it wasn't for my children and the snowplow driver, I wouldn't have anything to blog about.

Biblio - I'm totally sure that the correct one would be 'symbol ladies'. And that's very astute of your nephew to recognize that.

Isabelle - thanks for visiting! And I'm hoping that things aren't too cold and snowy for too much longer over there, though the news this a.m. said that the cold snap in the UK was due to last for some time. Stay warm! (Coffee with Loth should do it.)

Nat - Yeah, it blows goats, doesn't it?

Jen - But then you're younger than I am. I only got the Beyoncé thing due to my nephew playing/singing that song over the holidays. Leah already knew it.

Om Mama - Thanks for visiting, I'll pop over and check out your blog.

  11. I would have never gotten the song reference either!

Lately my girls are into dancing in Annika's room to a hip hop CD they got for Christmas. UGH!

  12. oh god, this made me laugh. i sing jingles all the time and grace looks at me like i'm an alien, or she asks me to sing it over, and over and over again (especially "me and the boys and our 50, just me and the boys and our beer" - remember that one?)
