Breakfast with Robert Duvall

Is it wrong to amuse yourself with pop-culture references at your children's expense? 'Cause if it is, I don't want to be right.

Today, at the breakfast table:

Me (placing plates on the table): Here you go. Toasted bagel with cheese for Leah, and peanut butter toast for Rachel.

Rachel: Mmmmm. Peanut butter. I love peanut butter. I love it when it's all melty on the toast*. I love the smell of peanut butter in the morning.

Me: Does it smell like victory?

Rachel: What?

Me: Never mind.

*Please note that Rachel, like her mother, recognizes the superiority of materials being applied to hot, as opposed to cold, toast.

  1. No, that is so right. J and I spend half our lives quoting pop culture at the kids!

  2. HA! Kevin and I quote that line frequently.

  3. Actually, peanut butter melted over toast does smell like victory!

  4. ONE day they will realize how cool you really are.

  5. Anonymous11:38 AM

Damn you and your hot toast loving offspring!! I bet you've never even introduced them to cold toast and let them make up their own minds, HAVE YOU? No. I didn't think so. Way to force your narrow-minded prejudices down their throats (literally).

  6. We do that sort of thing with our girls all the time and every. single. time. it goes right over their heads. Makes Pete and me look like total dorks as we snort with laughter.

  7. I would have said the same thing. lol...

  8. Strictly - Whew. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Briana - It's so very quotable, how can we resist?

Jazz - Mmmm, and it *tastes* like victory too.

    Meanie - Some day...God willing.

XUP - I should expect this kind of closeminded thinking from a cold toast lover...but the truth of the matter is that I have on occasion, offered the children cold toast. Not so much out of a sincere desire to show them an alternative toast lifestyle, but more on account of a loss of attention during breakfast preparation. And the toast was returned, with instructions to 'heat it up again, and add some more butter'. So there.

Jen - But it's so. much. fun. And you and Pete could never be dorky. Never.

Susan - not a fan of Apocalypse Now?

  9. Cold toast? The horror...the horror...

  10. Biblio - *snort* Good one!

  11. Late apology to Susan. I thought you meant you'd say the same thing as Rachel, and that's why I replied like that. Upon reading now, I realize you meant you'd say the same thing as ME.

Sorry. And yay, I'm not so nuts then.
